FIRE DAMAGES OUR THRIFT SHOP IN BROOKFIELD

Friday, April 19, 2013 - Brookfield, IL —  On Thursday evening, April 18, at approximately 11:00 pm there was a fire at the Helping Hand Thrift Shop in Brookfield. The building sustained extensive damage but no one was in the building at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

First Responders from Brookfield, Pleasantview, LaGrange, LaGrange Park, McCook and other numerous neighboring towns responded quickly to the scene. “As I watched firefighters and police respond quickly to the scene, I could not be more proud of our community”, said Mary Beth Hepp, Executive Director of Helping Hand Center in Countryside.

Many local members of the community called 911 and were concerned for Helping Hand Center, a local nonprofit in Countryside who owns the Helping Hand Thrift Shop. “This will not stop us from continuing to serve our clients and fulfill our mission of assisting persons with developmental disabilities achieve their highest level of independence through quality programs and services”, said Hepp.

“As a Brookfield resident, I am heartened that Brookfield First Responders were able to quickly come to Helping Hand Center’s urgent cry for help, given the massive flooding the village was experiencing last night and well into today. The Helping Hand Thrift Shop is a community institution in itself and a vital establishment in Brookfield, as well as it also being a vibrant program where many volunteers and donors partner with the mission of Helping Hand Center,” said Ronald Melka, Executive Director of

Lyons Township Mental Health Commission.

The Thrift Shop is closed. They are unable to accept any item donations. For financial contributions to Helping Hand Center please call 708-352-3580 or go to hhcenter.org.

HERE'S WHAT OUR THRIFT SHOP USED TO BE...

For over Our friendly neighborhood resale shop is located in the heart of Brookfield on Grand Boulevard, within walking distance of the Metra train station. We offer a wide variety of items, including "Brand New," and gently used clothing, household goods, collectibles, china, crystal, sporting goods, books, furniture, records, antiques, and countless other items, all at bargain prices.

The Brookfield Thrift Shop also serves as a training site for many students working with Helping Hand's Employment Services Department. Students gain experience in a retail setting to help prepare them for job placement out in the community.
